Week 52! OK, did I put my money where my mouth was?
1. Worthy Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 (OK, so it cost me $26 a bottle - fantastic and drinks like a $50 bottle, however Wine Spectator trashed the 06 and I will probably wait for the 2007) update - tried the 06 at the suggestion of the winery owner and it was very good not as good as the 07 but very good, thanks Wine Spectator for another off the mark review - 12 Bottles
2. Emilio Moro 2006 Ribera Del Duero - 9 Bottles
3. Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 - 12 Bottles
4. Landmark Overlook Chardonnay 2007 - 3 Bottles
5. Atteca Old Vines 2007 and 2008 - 6 Bottles
6. Cantina Zaccagnini 2007 (My favorite pizza and pasta wine) - 7 bottles
7. Chateau Des Karantes - 3 Bottles
8. Juan Gill 2007 - 3 Bottles
9. Venta Morales - 6 Bottles
That being said you cannot go wrong with 14 Hands Merlot 2007 (didn't review this but actually liked it better than their cab)or the Louis Martini Sonoma Cab 2007 or Sacred Stone (Cab Blend) Cask #5. For additional whites, I enjoyed the Cuvaison and Gruet 2007 Chardonnay and the Pewsey Vale Riesling.

King Estate Signature Collection 2008 Pinot Noir
Winery : King Estate (Signature Collection)
Varietal: Pinot Noir
Price Paid: $23.99 (Normally $29.99)
Vintage: 2008
Area: Oregon
Alcohol: 13%
Purchased: Meijer (Seen at COSTCO in the past as well.)
Overall: This was my first 2008 Oregon Pinot and we have been hearing that if you couldn’t make good Pinot in Oregon in “08” you shouldn’t be making it period. This wine was delicious and a cherry bomb with cranberry and cola. Classic new world ripe pinot. Excellent wine to hold up to that Thanksgiving stuffing, gravy,... And, if you are going to someone else’s house, a nice gift and you can feel like you are splurging but not breaking the bank.
Reviews
"Medium ruby color, spicy, ripe cherry aromas; nice, bright red cherry flavors with spicy notes; silky texture; good structure and balance; long finish. Bright and spicy, this is a great all-purpose Pinot for the table."

"Just released, young and tight, this widely available (25,000 case) Oregon Pinot shows the strengths of the 2008 vintage. The cranberry and raspberry fruit has plenty of supporting acidity, while the barrel regimen—a mix of new, one-, two- and three-year-old French oak—brings in cedar, smoke and caramel highlights. "

Emilio Moro Ribera Del Duero 2006
Winery : Emilio Moro
Varietal: Tempranillo
Price Paid: $21.99
Vintage: 2006
Area: Ribera Del Duero, Spain
Alcohol: 14.5%
Purchased: Plum Market – West Bloomfield, MI
Overall: Absolutely beautiful, mouth wateringly delicious wine. I served this wine on 2 different occasions and everyone literally loved this wine. It was #99 on the Wine Spectator Top 100 and frankly blew away the Lan Reserva Rioja (Lan was good but not as good) that made #52 on the list. Buy this wine!

"Ripe cherry, fig pudding, vanilla and spice flavors mingle in this firm, lively red. There's plenty of structure, but the red fruit flavors are bright and expressive. Drink now through 2016."

Wine Spectator
"The 2006 Emilio Moro was aged in French and American oak for 12 months. It has a superb bouquet of smoke, roasted herbs, scorched earth, and blackberry. Layered on the palate, it has tons of fruit, plenty of spice box notes, a firm structure, and 2-3 years of aging potential. This lengthy effort should provide pleasure through 2026. "

"Opaque ruby. Brooding cherry and blackberry aromas are complemented by smoked meat, minerals and anise. Sappy dark berry flavors stain the palate and are braced by zesty minerals and dusty tannins. Gains weight and sweetness on the finish, which repeats the dark berry note and lingers impressively. "

Vietti 2007 Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco
Winery : Vietti
Varietal: Nebbiolo Perbacco
Price Paid: $21.00
Vintage: 2008
Area: Langhe, Italy
Alcohol: 14%
Purchased: Whole Foods
Overall: Another very good low-cost Italian red from the noble Nebbiolo grape. This is the grape of my favorite Italian wine, Barolo. I highly recommend that you pick up a bottle of this wine to enjoy for a change of pace. A big wine for the price.

2007 Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco
The third and most basic selection goes into the Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco, a wine that Luca Currado created with the intention of offering an affordable, entry-level Nebbiolo. Perbacco is a Barolo in everything but name….and price tag. All of the fruit from these Barolo designated vineyards is vinified and aged in the same fashion as the more important parcels in the estate’s collection. With just one more month in bottle prior to being released, Perbacco could be entitled to carry the Barolo DOCG. At roughly $25 retail, it is one of the finest values readers will come across from any region.
The just-bottled 2007 Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco offers up generous fruit along with menthol, spices and hard candy, showing notable intensity while retaining an essentially mid-weight style. Round, suave tannins add to the long and refined finish. This is a wonderful vintage for Perbacco. In 2007 Perbacco is made from parcels in Bricco Boschis, Ginestra and Mosconi (aged together), Liste, Brunella, Crocetta, Pernanno and the youngest vines in Fossati, Ravera (planted in 2000) and Scarrone (planted in 2003). I tasted the 2007 Perbacco from tank in its final blend just prior to bottling and then a few days after it was bottled. Both times it was
outstanding.

Wine Tasting Suggestion
Burgans Albariño Rias Baixas ($15): 90 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Burgans is a custom cuvee made for importer Eric Solomon. While it’s not the best Albarino on the market, in terms of bang for the buck, it has no challenger. The 2007 Burgans Albarino is light gold-colored with a sprightly nose of mineral, spring flowers, and lemon peel. Ripe, balanced, and concentrated, this is an ideal match for flaky fish courses.
From Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Light yellow-gold. Exotically perfumed nose displays smoky peach, mango and papaya, plus a strong floral accent. Deep and chewy, with more power than I usually find in this wine. Tropical fruit flavors coat the palate and pick up a subtle herbal note on the back end. This could handle richer foods." (Sept/Oct '08) Dr. Jay Miller, the gentleman that reviews Spanish wines for Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, nailed it on this one. I agree with him that this is simply the best inexpensive Albariño made on a yearly basis. Notes of white peach mingle with wet stone and Meyer lemon on the nose. The freshness and vigor here is impressive with more of the notes of stone and layers of sprightly apricot and lime on the palate. This is a wine that instantly gets your stomach growling and your mouth watering. You want oysters, lightly fried white fish or even roast chicken and a glass that can somehow hold this whole bottle at once. (Bryan Brick, K&L)
Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc 2007($36): Food & Wine American Wine Awards, Best Sauvignon Blanc over $20 Spottswoode made its mark in Cabernet but also produces sensational Sauvignon Blancs like this one, mingling grapefruit-rind notes with melon and fig, and finishing clean and dry. Winemaker Jennifer Williams blends in a portion of fragrant Sauvignon Musque to give the firm white an exotic note. (October, 2009)
The Wine Advocate, Robert Parker Spottswoode produces one of the finest Sauvignon Blancs in Northern California. The 2007 Sauvignon Blanc (nearly 100% Sauvignon from two clones, the classic clone and the more fragrant Musque clone, and a small dollop of Semillon) is so popular that it is now a cross county blend, with about 60% of the fruit from Napa and the rest from Sonoma. This melon, fig, and honeyed grapefruit-scented and flavored white sees some oak aging. Crisp, elegant, medium-bodied, intense yet classic flavors emerge from this food-friendly wine.
Rating 91 Points
Landmark Overlook California Chardonnay 2007($23): 92 points from Wine Spectator: "Green apple, floral, lime and citrus blossom scents give this full-bodied Chardonnay a distinctive edge. Crisp and flinty, ending with wet stone. Drink now through 2012. 18,000 cases made." (06/09) 91 points and two stars from the Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine: "Its pulpy apple and pear aromas are nicely mated to creme brulee oak in a nose that is both juicy and energetic at the same time. It is quite ripe without bowing to excess, and while it is full and even a tad on the fleshy side on the palate, it finds its bright fruit and brisk acid keeping things in balance. Try serving it with cracked crab, sauteed scallops or one of the sweeter white fishes to allow both its fruit and its vitality to show off." (04/09) 90 points Robert Parker: "The 2007 Chardonnay Overlook (most from Sonoma County with about 20% from Santa Barbara and Monterey) offers a beautiful bouquet of peaches, pineapples, and other tropical fruits along with super-purity and focus. Medium to full-bodied, crisp, and pure, with the oak pushed to the background, this beautiful Chardonnay can be enjoyed over the next several years. The always reliable Landmark winery continues to turn out a bevy of Burgundian-styled Pinot Noirs and impressive Chardonnays. One of the best Chardonnay values in the marketplace is their Overlook." Sofia Rose – Monterey County 2009 ($16): From the Top 5 Inexpensive Rose List - 1.) Francis Coppola Sofia Rose - Monterey County $15.99: This wine is like no other, because the owner of this winery is the famed film director best known for "The Godfather" sagas and "Apocalypse Now". His rose of unparallel beauty is named after his daughter Sofia, who is an Academy-Award winning film director in her own right. When the rose is chilled its refreshing style is a savory summer wine you can serve hors d'oeuvres with.
Grown in the vineyards of Monterey County the 2008 Sofia Rose has a bright pink hue and an enticing perfume of crushed raspberries, rose petals, and tea leaves. It's bright and refreshing on the palate. The Sofia Rose offers delicate flavors of strawberries, red cherries, ginger, and candied orange peel. Some say the wine is reminiscent of the lovely dry rosés served in seaside cafés along the French Riviera.
Winemaker Notes A blend of Grenache and Syrah, the fruit for our Rosè is grown in the cool vineyards of Monterey County, where the growing seasons are typically long and the soils impart upon the grapes bright red fruit flavors and nuances of violets. The 2009 Sofia Rosè displays a luminous magenta hue and beautiful perfume of wild strawberries, tea leaves, and violets. Luscious flavors of raspberries, cherries, candied orange, and cloves enliven the palate, making this year's vintage richly fruited yet graceful and lightly textured.
The Red Wines This Evening
Flora Springs 2004 Trilogy, Napa Valley ($69): Flora Springs has never had a heavy hand with Trilogy, always choosing elegance over power and never trying to force the wine to be more than the vintage could deliver. That philosophy allowed winemaker Ken Deis to make a superb Trilogy despite erratic weather in 2003, but the '04, from a more predictable vintage, is even better. The classic aroma of cassis is the first clue. This is an elegant, complex Meritage, beautifully structured and delicate despite its many layers, including a coffee-chocolate-spice nuance that is especially appealing. Still very young, this wine will only improve over the next dozen years of so. It's not inexpensive, but it's a bargain compared to other Napa Valley reds of equal quality.

Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 ($40): Wine Enthusiast - "A beautiful Cabernet, rich and mellow, and drinking well now. Shows soft tannins and smoky oak framing blackberry, cherry, cocoa, herb and spice flavors."
Rating 90 Points
Winemaker's Notes: The 2007 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon weaves warm aromas of cassis and tobacco into a bright canvas of raspberry, plum, and currant notes. On the palate, flavors of black cherry and boysenberry meet hints of vanilla, bay, and mocha beneath a generous structure of round, mouth-filling tannins. This big, brambly wine with bold mountain character is richly expressed with layers evolving through the full, lingering finish. "85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 4% Petite Verdot, 2% Syrah and 1% Malbec. Deep garnet. Concentrated aromas of blackberry, dark chocolate, anise, and bay, highlighted with notes of coffee and currants. Very full-bodied, plushy and dense. Rich and round mouthfeel with intense flavors of cassis and black cherry. Good structure and well-balanced, with fine-grained tannins and a long finish of sweet vanilla, mocha, and berries. 14.5% alcohol."
Bodegas Juan Gil 2007 ($15.00): International Wine Cellar "Opaque purple. Blueberry, boysenberry and smoky Indian spices on the nose, with a sexy floral quality coming on with air. Juicy, sweet dark berry flavors are framed by velvety tannins and enlivened by zesty minerality. Gains depth and fleshiness with air, finishing on a strong boysenberry note, with excellent sappy persistence. This is delicious right now."

Personal, a delicious wine made from a different varietal, dark fruit, spicy, a bit of herb and high alcohol that in spite of the alcohol went down very easily. Very balanced as the winemaker statejavascript:void(0)s. It went beautifully with the Pork Saltimbocca recipe below that was incredibly simple to make.
Pork Saltimbocca (courtesy of the Williams-Sonoma Catalog)
http://www.williams-sonoma.com/recipe/pork-saltimbocca.html
• 4 Boneless Pork Loin Chops 1 inch thick
• Fresh Sage Leaves
• 8 slices of Prosciutto
• Balsalmic Vinegar
• Olive Oil
• Salt
• Freshly Ground Pepper
Salt and Pepper chops, then lay 2 sage leaves on top of each chop and wrap with 2 slices of prosciutto. Brush with olive oil and grill approximately 6 minutes on each side until internal temperature registers 140 degrees. Cover loosely with foil and let sit for 10 minutes. Drizzle with balsamic vinegar and serve it is simple and delicious.
Winemaker's notes: We selected the Monastrell grapes for this wine from 40-year old parcels in our estate vineyards. Here shallow, chalky soils on a bed of limestone and rock, combined with an arid climate, produce the low yields (1,8 ton per acre) required for wine of this complexity. After harvesting, the deep purple grapes are whole-cluster macerated "sur lie" for 25 days, and then pressed and aged for 12 months in French oak barrels. It has a very dark cherry color with purple tones. In the nose it has powerful aromas of red berries, toasted and smoked notes from their aging in the oak barriques.
It has good structure with ripe and sweet tannins. In the mouth it is very long, and with a perfect balance between fruit, alcohol and the oak tones, which make it very pleasant and easy to drink.
Pair with meat, stewed meat, stewed vegetable, mushroom, poultry, sauces fish, smoked seafood, blue and cured cheese, red meat, roast and baked meat (lamb, pig, ox).

Osoyoos Larose 2003 Le Grand Vin
Winery : Osoyoos Larose
Varietal: Bordeaux Blend
Price Paid: $14.97
Vintage: 2003
Area: British Columbia, CAN
Alcohol: 13.4%
Purchased: Plum Market – West Bloomfield, MI
Overall: A Canadian Bordeaux… If you didn’t tell me what this was, I would have blind tasted this and guessed it was a nice mid-priced Bordeaux. I really enjoyed this wine and will buy a couple more bottles. Seriously the first word that came to my mind when I tasted it was the classic Bordeaux “earthiness”. It has the lead pencil, earth, tobacco, and dark fruit characteristics with significant tannins and I can’t believe I paid $14.97 on sale for this wine. My advice “Go buy 1 now and see if it fits your tastes”.

Osoyoos Larose
Groupe Taillan of Bordeaux, France (Gruaud-Larose), and Vincor International, based in Ontario, Canada, formed a joint venture partnership in 1998 to develop vineyards and a small winery dedicated to the production of Canadian VQA* wines, that would meet if not exceed the quality standards of their Bordeaux counterparts. The wines would be made from the classic Bordeaux varietals: merlot, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, petit verdot and malbec. The partners believed that the unique terroir of Canada’s western wine-growing region, the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia and, in particular, the southern part of the Valley, was capable of producing fruit of sufficiently high quality to achieve their goal.

The wine’s name, Osoyoos Larose, reflects the partners’ roots in France and Canada. Osoyoos refers to the location of the vineyards in the Okanagan Valley, on the mountain slopes above Lake Osoyoos. Larose is derived from one of Groupe Taillan’s most prestigious estates in Bordeaux, the Deuxième Cru, or second growth, Château Gruaud-Larose, which reflects the centuries-old winemaking traditions of the world-famous wine region.
The Osoyoos Larose Joint Venture Partners Groupe Taillan owns six world-renowned winemaking estates that have been defining international standards of quality for over two centuries. Winery: Michele Chiarlo
Varietal: Barbera
Price Paid: $15.99
Vintage: 2007
Area: Asti, Piedmont, Italy
Alcohol: 13.5%
Purchased: Colasanti’s Market
Overall: This was recommended as a bargain. I like Barbera but honestly this didn’t thrill me. It was ok, dry with a nice touch of acidity. But would not buy again.
Reviews:
The Wine Advocate (Robert Parker):
"The estate’s 2007 Barbera d’Asti Superiore Le Orme is a mid-weight offering with good definition and focus in its perfumed red berries. This refined, subtle wine offers good balance in an approachable, feminine style. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2012. "

Winemaker notes:
Michele Chiarlo selects his Barbera d’Asti from the best of these vineyards planted in older vines and harvested at peak maturity. Vinified at the Chiarlo cellars in Calamandrana, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and is then aged a least one year in oak.

Price Paid: $20.99
Vintage: 2007
Area: Napa Valley, CA
Alcohol: 14.5%
Purchased: Costco
Overall: This is as good a bottle of wine as you can buy for around $20. It is a “Mountain Cab” and I particularly like mountain cabs in ripe years like 2007. I had the 2004 (another ripe year) in a restaurant and went on to drink 5 more bottles over the next 18 months. I paid $34.99 retail a bottle for the 2004.
I was in Trader Joe’s a week or so ago and saw the 2007 for $28.99 and thought it was a great deal and bought 3. I drank one and thought it was fantastic. It just got better over the 3 days it was open. Then I saw it at Costco for $20.99 and bought 9 more bottles. I will enjoy this over the next 2 - 3 years. It is available in many places.

Varietal: Pinot Grigio & Verduzzo
Price Paid: $17.00
Vintage: 2008
Area: Friuli, Italy
Alcohol: 13%
Purchased: Papa Joe’s
Overall: OK, I am not a big Pinot Grigio fan. But, this is a delicious wine! It is 75% Pinot Grigio and 25% Verduzzo (which adds a bit of peach, apricot, honey…). The Verduzzo is picked slightly overripe to provide more body and a bit more sweetness but this is not an overly sweet wine. I bought this wine for my wife's "Girls Night Out" and they loved it. This is one of my favorite wineries and I have never had a Masi wine that I did not like, I enjoy their appassimento style (ancient process of drying grapes to make wine dating back 3,00 years), they have simply one of my favorite Amarone’s and even their Campofiorin is excellent (they have it at Maggiano’s Restaurant chain).

The vintage
Delayed by cool weather in the spring and a moderate summer, harvest began 10 days later than previous years. Hot temperatures in August ripened the fruit, and harvest was quickly ramped up in order to obtain fruit at its optimum ripeness. The cooler than normal growing season and full crop loads led to flavorful fruit with restrained sugar levels and ample acidity.
winemaking
Grapes were sourced from vineyards throughout Washington State, including the Horse Heaven Hills, Columbia Valley, Wahluke Slope and the Yakima Valley. Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Franc were added to create a fruit-forward blend and to enhance mouth feel. The wine was aged for 12 months in a combination of American and French oak barrels to build structure and complexity in the blend.

Alcohol: 14.3%

Overall: Simply the best Cab in this price range I have ever had in almost 20 years of drinking mainly Cabs. Right now I am drinking the late 90’s vintages out of my cellar. I learned the aging potential of this gem from Ron Edwards, Master Sommelier. Serve this to company with grilled meats, roast beef, etc. and no one will be disappointed. I poured this 2007 through an aerator before drinking and found the 2007 outstanding and delicious. If you don’t have an aerator you may want to decant.

K & L Wines
According to Robert Parker: "Several other great values emerge from Beringer, including the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Knight’s Valley. A major sleeper of the vintage, this $27 wine will probably be marked down at discounters, making it a terrific value. This sexy North Coast Cabernet offers copious quantities of black cherry and black currant fruit intermixed with smoky barbecue, roasted herb, sweet cassis, and blackberry scents. Round and gentle with silky tannins, this is a plush red to drink over the next 5-8 years." (12/09)
89 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good deep, bright ruby. Black cherry, licorice and fresh herbs on the slightly medicinal nose. At once dense and juicy, with lively acidity and a firm tannic spine keeping the bright dark berry and licorice flavors under wraps today. This has good weight and balance and finishes with broad, serious, building tannins that call for a year or two of patience. Already showing a bit of flesh, but give this another year or two to round out in bottle." (May/June 10)

Airfield Estates 2008 Riesling
This week’s selection:
Winery: Airfield Estates
Varietal: Riesling
Price Paid: $15.99
Vintage: 2008
Area: Yakima, WA
Alcohol: 14.1%
Purchased: Colasanti’s Market
Overall: I like my Rieslings on the dry side but this had a pleasant sweetness with enough acid to balance it out. Apple, citrus and a good Riesling to have with Chinese or Curry in particular.
Reviews
Winemaker’s Notes:
A family owned and operated winery located in Prosser, Washington -- in the heart of the Yakima Valley AVA. Great wines begin in the vineyard! Airfield Estates uses 100% estate grown fruit. Our first vines were planted in 1968 by Don Miller. Today, the estate vineyard spans over 860 acres and includes 26 different varieties.
The vineyard is located at the foot of the Rattlesnake Mountains in the Yakima Valley. All of the vineyard blocks are situated within a 3 mile radius of the original WWII airbase. Within this range, there is a considerable amount of diversity of soil and microclimatic conditions. To maximize quality, we carefully match grape varietals to the most suitable sites.
Well balanced with impressive acidity, this slightly sweet Riesling offers a bouquet of citrus and apple with a touch of minerality. It begs for Asian inspired foods, oysters, shellfish, and salads.
From Fullpullwines:
http://fullpullwines.wordpress.com/2010/01/06/2008-airfield-states-riesling/
This Riesling comes from a block of 30-year-old vines that also goes into Ste Michelle’s Eroica Riesling program, routinely recognized as one of the state’s premier Riesling bottlings. Lots of citrus notes on the nose, with just the barest hint of petrol adding attractive complexity. On the palate, there is zingy acid that immediately hits the sides of the tongue, bringing flavors of lemon, flower, and clay. The 1.7% residual sugar is almost imperceptible, balanced beautifully by all that acid.

Maipe 2008 Malbec
This week’s selection:
Winery: Maipe
Varietal: Malbec
Price Paid: $11.19
Vintage: 2008
Area: Mendoza, Argentina
Alcohol: 14%
Purchased: Bella Vino Fine Wines
Overall: Another enjoyable bottle of wine at a good price point. As my friend Rinart has said, this varietal when from Argentina (originated in Cahors, France as Auxerroix not Malbec, the grape does so well in Argentina that they have made it the up and coming wine that it is today) seems to have more consistency than most and he really hasn’t had a bad one. Pour in the glass and let sit for at least 20 minutes. Calls out for grilled meats. The Pascual Toso Malbec reviewed several months ago was even more enjoyable.
Reviews
From the K & L Wines Website: (www.klwines.com)
90 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Malbec is a glass-coating purple color with a striking perfume of violets, black cherry, and black raspberry. Exhibiting surprising complexity for its price category, the wine has gobs of fruit, savory flavors, and excellent depth and length. It is an outstanding value for drinking over the next 3-4 years. Alberto Antonini (think Altos Las Hormigas) is a consultant at Maipe which in and of itself is an indicator that the winery is focused on quality." (12/08)
The largest selling wine in the history of K&L, in terms of bottles sold, was the 2006 Pascual Toso Malbec for $8.99. I'm sure many of you remember this spectacular value. Well, I think I've found the next Toso. For the same price here is another Malbec that you can afford by the case and drink on a nightly basis. With its big nose chock full of cacao, espresso, violet, bitter root and gobs of wild berry fruit, this is aromatically packed for a wine at this price point. With air the nose becomes brighter and more high-toned, expressing more of a raspberry and cinnamon note. Full weight and with a plush feel, this is full of ever-so-slightly jammy blackberry fruit laced with cedar, chocolate cream and coffee bean flavors. Bursting with flavor, the finish is packed with black pepper, tar and mocha. Inexpensive, full of character, ready to drink, what more can you ask for? (Bryan Brick, K&L)

Tasting Notes: This wine pairs well with light meats such as roasted pork, poultry, grilled meats as well as soft cheeses. A high class wine, ready to drink or to age.
This delicious wine presents notes of ripe plums and cherries. The nose portrays typical Grenache character with caramel, tobacco and toasted accents. Well balanced, round and supple.
THE SETTING
Château des Karantes is a magnificent vineyard situated in Languedoc-Roussillon. The domaine is in the heart of a small valley located two minutes away from the Mediterranean between the seaside resort towns of Narbonne Plage and St. Pierre sur Mer. The estate offers a beautiful panorama of the Mediterranean Sea with the Pyrenees Mountains visible in the distance. The vineyard is named after a former Bishop of Carcassonne, owner of the estate hundreds of years ago.
THE VINEYARD
The terroir of château des Karantes is distinguished by its proximity to the sea and its South-East/East exposition. The inland side of the vineyard is surrounded by the cliffs of La Clape which protects the grapes from the drying ‘Vent du Nord’ (North Winds) while the cool breeze from the sea assures the balance and freshness of our wines. The soil is predominately Clay and Limestone and allows the production of rich, powerful and aromatic Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre based wines. At the entrance of the estate an area of sandy-silty soils produce delicate and elegant red and white wines.
The Vineyard is planted with the traditional varietals of La Clape, (17.8% Carignan, 29.3% Grenache, 32.2 % Syrah, and 16.6% Mourvedre) and a small one hectare parcel of a white varietal called Terret and Bourboulenc 4.1 %. The Terret are the oldest vines planted on the estate, dating back to 1927. There are Carignan vines that can be traced back to 1928. The vines are planted 5000 per hectare. In our goal to improve the vineyard, 5.7 hectares of Syrah were planted in 2005 and then 3.4 ha of Syrah and 1 ha of Mourvedre in 2006.

Wine of the week: 2006 Estancia Reserve Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir
Published: February 12th, 2010 01:05 AM ADN.com, Alaska’s Newspaper
While the fruit coming out of Napa and Sonoma may command fame and fortune, Paul Masson knew long ago that the bench lands in Monterey were perfect for growing grapes. In the mid '80s, Augustian Huneeuns purchased the older vineyards and Estancia was born.
The 2006 Estancia Reserve Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir is a clear bright red. The powerhouse nose is classic pinot noir velvet. Instantly apparent are the aromas of blueberry, cherry and spice. Medium full, the mouth has excellent sweetness of fruit and a mild tannic grip. Its layered finish runs from blueberry-cherry to raspberry-stem. This wine is continuously giving all it needs. Serve with lamb or duck to maximize its full potential. Costs about $25.

2007 Foxglove Paso Robles Zinfandel
90 points in Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Fifty Super Domestic Wine Values:" "The outstanding 2007 Zinfandel (86% Zinfandel and 14% Petite Sirah) is another winner and phenomenal bargain. This is classic Zinfandel with loads of berry fruit, pepper, earth, and roasted Provencal herbs. The wine is pure, full-bodied, ripe, with not a hard edge to be found. Drink it over the next 2-3 years. These are absolutely spectacular bargains from the very high-quality Varner Winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains. This is their less expensive line-up of wines, and I encourage readers to try them-- they are true winners." (Sept. 2009)

CUVAISON 2008 Chardonnay
Winery: CUVAISON
Varietal: Chardonnay
Price Paid: $21.59
Vintage: 2008
Area: Carneros, CA
Alcohol: 14.2%
Purchased: Bella Vino Fine Wines
Overall: Delicious Chardonnay, not overly oaked, overly sweet or overly anything. I like drier, less oaky styles and this has a nice balance of fruit, oak and acidity to make this a wonderful wine to pair with food.

Winemaker Comments:
Cuvaison's Carneros Chardonnay comes from the winery's own estate in the southern part of Napa Valley. This cool climate vineyard allows nearly perfect conditions year after year to produce world class Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Syrah. Controlling all farming aspects within their own vineyard gives Cuvaison an advantage in producing the best quality fruit therefore minimizing over manipulation at the winery. This 2008 offers an aroma of kiwi, clove spice, nectarine and lime zest with a hint of toasty oak. On the palate this exquisite Chardonnay is chock full of lush, mouth filling flavors of peach, apricot and papaya backed by vanilla and allspice.
Aging 8 months in small French oak barrels, 25% new French oak

2008 Cuvaison Carneros Chardonnay

One of my major complaints about most Chardonnays being produced in California is that they are way overdone with too much oak and alcohol, and too much creaminess. Moreover, many producers of that ilk also leave a bit of residual sugar in the finish wine to make it "bigger and richer." The theory, as it was expressed to me some years ago by one winemaker, is that the average American wine consumer will tell everyone that they like their white wines dry, but in reality they do not - or there wouldn't have been the off-dry to sweet White Zinfandel craze that took place nearly 30years ago. More importantly, it is almost impossible to match food (other than cheese) to that style of Chardonnay. That is why it is so refreshing to discover a Chardonnay that is dry, has good acidity and structure, and the emphasis is totally on the presentation of varietal fruit, as with the Cuvaison 2008 Carneros Charonnay. Eby has informed me that this Gem will be one of our house Chardonnays for the month. (Jim Barr)

This is a cool climate Carneros Chardonnay that is exploding with wonderful fruit and winter spice. On the nose are bright kiwi, peach and apricot flavors, followed by a mouthful of rich minerals and spice like nutmeg and cloves. It finishes with toasty oak and great acidity. Perfect for the winter season with its medium to full bodied expression, this is a for-sure hit for any occasion, party, or anyone you want to please, just pour them a glass and smiles will begin to shine.

Opens with appetizing oak flavors, then focuses its attention on its intensely wound core of vanilla, mineral, pear and fig-laced flavors, all of which are rich and concentrated. Draws you back for another sip.

Francis Coppola - Diamond Collection Claret 2007
Winery: Francis Coppola
Varietal: Cabernet-based Bordeaux Blend
Price Paid: $23.99 on sale for $18.99
Vintage: 2007
Area: Napa, Sonoma and Eldorado, CA
Alcohol: 13.5%
Purchased: Meijer (even less at Costco or Sam’s Club)
Overall: Very good Cabernet blend for the price. It tasted even better the 2nd day and still drank well the 3rd day. Definitely taste the dark fruits: blackberry and dark cherry. It is an intense cab for the price. I have never been disappointed by this wine.
Reviews
Winemaker Comments:
A blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot, 4% Merlot, 4% Malbec and 3% Cabernet Franc.
The 2007 vintage got underway earlier than most years as a result of premature bud break. This occurred because of an unseasonably warm winter. The season lasted longer than normal as well because of prolonged moderate temperatures. These conditions were ideal for creating physiologically perfect fruit, which is why winemakers have declared this one of the best vintages of the decade. Our Claret is always elegant, but this year it's a true show stopper; lush with a beautiful tapestry of smooth tannins, intense flavor, and seductive aromas. With a deep crimson color, this wine gives way to aromas of blackberries, plums and vanilla cream while flavors of wild berries, cherries, spice and mocha dance on the palate.
When paired with classic dishes such as beef stroganoff, leg of lamb or potato gratin, you can create a sublime dining experience.

2007 Francis Coppola Diamond Series Claret
What's claret, you ask? Don't be fooled. Claret is just the British word for Bordeaux style blend! And that's exactly what Coppola's Diamond Collection Claret is…a blend of Cabernet, Merlot, Cab Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot from Napa, Sonoma and El Dorado. Wrapped in a crimson-colored robe, this affordable blend has an evocative nose redolent of black fruit and vanilla, and an equally appealing raspberry, cherry and blackberry-filled palate with hints of coffee and chocolate on the finish!

Castle Rock 2008 California Cuvee Pinot Noir

Price Paid: $13.69
Vintage: 2008
Area: California Cuvee – Geyserville, CA
Alcohol: 13.8%

Overall: Decent Pinot Noir for the price, simple, fruit forward, cherry and strawberry flavors. But, I would opt for the Oyster Bay Pinot Noir over this for the $5 more a bottle.

Castle Rock Winery Comments:
Our Castle Rock Pinot Noir is produced from grapes grown in a carefully selected group of California vineyards, at which the climate and soil conditions provide excellent growing conditions for this Burgundian varietal. The wine is elegant and medium-bodied, offering aromas of cherry, tea and herbal spice. On the palate it is smooth with a silky texture and mild tannins, giving flavors of black cherry, plum and spice, and finishing long and harmoniously, This versatile food wine pairs well with lamb, veal, salmon and light pasta dishes.
Rated: 85 by Connoisseurs' Guide, Oct 09 Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wines
Okay, it's direct, a little on the grapey side and fairly soft on the palate. No one is going to accuse it of challenging for a place in the cellar, but it is also tasty in an up-front way and comes with enough cherry character to suggest its varietal heritage. GOOD VALUE
